1. Poor excuse for a title. (It's the name of a chess-based game.) 2. Main character is a former slave of many talents and virtues: a superb dancer, a competent horse trainer, a skilled fighter, loyal, driven to free other slaves to the point of self-sacrifice... I remain faintly disgusted. 3. Romantic interest seems planted, and struck me as bland. 4. Plot is predictable and uninspiring. That said, the book isn't outright bad, but it never wavers into the realm of new and interesting.
