This book deals with some surprisingly mature themes. Hope (real name Tulip) has been abandoned by her mother, has no idea who her father is, and becomes a roving diner waitress with her Aunt Addie (who's a cook). Every time they get settled in a city, the diner shuts down and they have to move again. They finally find a small town with a diner that's as wonderful as its owner. Hope learns some valuable lessons about love and death and growing up and all that good stuff. This is a good book for mature middle school readers.
