This was a good read. It makes you think about a lot of things in life.

Love this book!! This book is an awesome read that any one who likes vampires should read. Its about a human girl (Bella Swan) who falls in love witha vampire boy (Edward Cullen). During this, James, a blood thirsty vampire tries to kill Bella. WIll the Cullens make it there in time to save her? To find out...read this book. Highly recommended.

"It was as black in the closet as old blood. They had shoved me in and locked the door. I breathed heavily through my nose, fighting desperately to remain calm. I tried counting to ten on every intake of breath, and to eight as I released each one slowly into the darkness. Luckily for me, they had pulled the gag so tightly into my open mouth that my nostrils were left unobstructed, and I was able to draw in one slow lungful after another of the stale, musty air." While I don't normally pick up crime novels, Sweetness caught my interest because it was so highly acclaimed, and because my brother recommended it. It was a good book - albeit, a fast, non-thinking kind of book. I didn't particularly care for the characters (although the main character, Flavia, is mildly amusing). The mystery was well-written - insomuch as the reader won't figure out "who did it" right away. Maybe it's just me, but this book didn't excite me. It was just okay. There's lots of kinds of books that I consider easy and fun reads. If you like crime fiction, this is probably one of them. Since I don't particular like that genre, I think I'll stick with the ones I do like.

The book won the Horror Writer's of America "best novel" award for 1992. I'm not sure why. Perhaps the themes were new and exciting then, and the approach of the Millenium gave rise to theological fears which this book developed in an original manner. Today, this book reminds one of The Da Vinci Code in its use of nefarious Catholic organizations, wild chases by our innocent (or not so innocent) heroes due to supernatural or science-fiction inspired reasons, and the general ambience of mystic phrophecies beginning to come true. In a current novel-reading challenge "Blood of the Lamb" counted as my mystery/thriller selection -- though it's much more on the thriller side, and actually could be considered horror or science fiction. There are some grusome torture scenes, the felt-life of which I suppose makes this well-written, even if quite uncomfortable. And the "sci-fi" involving the Shroud of Turin is fairly well explained. But all in all, as a read, it was just "okay."
