I started this book and didn't finish it, although it had some promising aspects. The thing that really annoyed me -- perhaps inordinately -- was the letters WRITTEN in colloquial Indian English. People who talk like that do not write like that; spoken Indian English and written Indian English are two different languages, the latter (generally) much much more formal and archaic in its diction than the former. This may seem like an unimportant distinction, but Ali's failure to respect it made the letters come across as cheap exoticism and the entire book (okay, well, the half I read) ring false.
