Why was a little girl left on the wharf in Australia with no one accompaning her, no note, and no one to meet her? This is the secret and mystery that both that grown little girl and her granddaughter try to solve. At first I was irritated by the skipping about in time and in characters from chapter to chapter in this novel. However, I began to realize this was the device the author used to slowly reveal the clues to the answer to the mystery and all the accompanying secrets. The clues had to come from different times and the experiences of different characters. As a reader I made some guesses about the answers to the secrets and then had to abandon them and make new ones or go back to original guesses further on. That requires the engagement of the reader. The fairy tales that are included give veiled hints to the answers to some of the secrets and are an interesting addition to the novel. This novel could give rise to good discussion in a book club. Even so, I wanted to say to "Nell", "You were raised by loving parents, but you don't know who your real parents are...So get over it already! Quit the drama".
