** spoiler alert ** When I started hearing word that this book was totally awful, I was thinking some reviewers were being too harsh. Sadly, I was disappointed...the general consensus that this book is repetitive and boring is quite apt. I dislike coming across as overly critical but I spent the whole book waiting for the hook, the plot build-up, the twist that draws you into the story. It never came. Near the end there is an incredibly unbelieveable bit of drama between Ayla & Jondalar (the main protagonists) but it is poorly developed, written and unrealistic. The reader is left shaking their head as some parts are skimmed as if we do not need to know them, yet some mundane details are repeated in an excruciating manner more than once. I did keep with the book and forced myself to finish it, since I loved the first 3 books in this series and wanted to follow it through to the end. Either Ms. Auel called in a ringer to finish her last novel or she has lost her touch. A disappointing finale.
