It was well written and the characters well-developed, but the material was so grim that I found it hard to read until I finally resigned myself to the fact that there was not to be a happy ending to this fiction. It was only at the end of the book that I discovered the story was fiction based on fact. The author took the fact of a Mary Saunders being executed at age 16 as the basis for her book. Perhaps if I had known that at the beginning, I would have been able to approach the book in a different frame of mind and enjoyed it more.
