my bookclub HATED this book, while i adored it. i find this really strange, as i usually have fairly pedestrian tastes. i think it helps to read this book and take care to note the differences between the introduction and the rest of the book. for example, in the introduction, blue says (paraphrase, as the book is not my constant companion) that it's "been a year since hannah killed herself." she is sure and confident of hannah's suicide. in the rest of the book, she is the most reluctant to call it that, and fully believes hannah was murdered. i fully believe that the book is a retelling of a girl's story the way she wishes it would've happened. she is smarter, people are more glamorous, her father is more sympathetic, etc. it isn't the truth, because the truth is awful and sad and mundane. like with most topics, when you explore it through a carefully selected syllabus, things seem pretty amazing. in reality, they were probably awful and sad and mundane.
