In this installation of the Dark Materials books, we are introduced to a new character, Will Parry. Will's father has been missing since his birth, and his mother, who he has always suspected as crazy, just might not be as crazy as he's always thought. On the run from some men who have been searching his home for some mysterious *thing* Will comes across a rip in the fabric between our world, and another. In the new world, Will meets up with Lyra, our hero from the first book. Together, they make their way through the worlds, discovering just what it is that's been going on lately. Pullman is not afraid to pull punches, and I'll warn you now: some beloved characters die in this, not randomly like in a GRRM novel, but with meaning, dignity, and... and... and it's powerful.

This was a fantastic book - beautifully written - a bit slow in parts but never boring. I loved it. Move it to the top of your reading list. I'm looking forward to Hosenni's next book.
