Really amazing

My whole life I've had deep and complex misgivings about capital punishment-- this book didn't exactly challenge them head on, but it did add a whole lot of layers that are still there today... It's also a phenomenal piece of literary journalism, as good a reflection as I've seen of the strained, bleak, ugly years in America shortly before I was born, and the type of endurance that most "important" books fail to execute, and most "light" but great books are afraid to be.
