It's amazing how a guy can be screwing around in Border's, pick up a book solely because Kate Winslet is on the cover, and read half the damn thing right there in the store. In the few hours it took me to read it, this simple little novel managed to tap directly into my fantasies and fears, dismantle my morals, redirect my empathy, and break my heart. Those of you who know me will know that this doesn't happen often. Only upon logging into Goodreads just now did I discover that The Reader was one of Oprah's book club selections. I'm honestly scared to think of how Saint Oprah could have brutalized and sliced apart this phenomenal piece of literature and replaced its brilliance with her own arrogant and uninspired droning, inevitably missing the point entirely. Yeah, I know that's harsh and grossly judgmental. Maybe I should look up her commentary on the book. Or maybe I should remain ignorantly euphoric over my own experience with it. But anyway... Good book!
