The premise of this book itself is interesting, what would WWII be like had it started 2 years earlier, with Germany invading Czechoslovakia to "reclaim" Sudetenland, rather then allowing themselves to be appeased in the Munich agreement. Turtledove tells this counterfactual historical narrative through the eyes of characters on all sides of the events, from Russian Bomber pilots to Americans Stranded in Germany to Japanese soldiers invading Siberia. Overall, these characters are able to convey the larger events which occur around them, but individually are not very interesting. Additionally, some parts of the book are repetitive, eg. soldiers going on prisoner raids, or Russians drinking vodlka. Overall, a decent book, though not one of Turtledove's best.
