This book certainly lived up to the hype! I listened to this on audio and it was superb. The narrators are fantastic. I am so glad that Octavia Spencer will be in the film adaptation. Set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early sixties Stockett tells the story of "The Help", those black women who work as maids, housekeepers, and nannies in the homes of the white middle and upper class. The narration alternates between Miss Skeeter, a white college graduate of the upper class and two maids, Aibileen and Minny. Skeeter, an aspiring writer, begins collecting stories from the maids to collect into a book. Despite great danger the maids describe what it is like to work in the homes of the white families of Jackson, both the good and the bad. Despite the suffering and degradation there are many moments of love shared among the characters. Aibileen's devotion to Mae Mobley, the little girl she cares for is unforgettable. Minny's hot tempered comments and actions cause her to lose many jobs and will cause readers to laugh out loud.
