Having lived in Puerto Rico I was intrigued to learn more about the history of both Cuba and Bacardi.
I used this book to form my semester plan for class on overcoming social constructs. I juxtaposed it against Seedfolks, in which they did overcome the social barriers and all the characters learned to work together. I love that book. Twisted was easy to read and I'm sure even teenage boys could get into it because of the male protagonist. Although we did see Tyler handle some difficult situations, I felt that his motivations, reactions, and relationships were glossed over in favor of the plot. Every other character besides Tyler was shown as superficial, choosing conformity over personality. Anderson writes plot driven books and I prefer character driven. I still enjoy her books though, and come away with the many themes she weaves into them. As a teacher, I think it could be easier to teach a book that is more evasive like hers where the students can pull what they want out of it.
One of the most thrilling, engrossing, and movingly sad books I've ever read.
Like Amis doing an imitation of Martin Amis. Painful to read, like late John Irving.
