I am really enjoying this book so far. Because its summer, I haven't been reading so much but I have faith that I will finish. I am amazed at how easy it is to read. I sometimes find the language in classics hard to read but not this one. I am very impressed.
Wow. Now I see why this book won the Nebula Award (1975) and the Hugo (1976). I don't often read military SF, but wanted to read this as I've always heard it is a classic within the Science Fiction genre. Born in Oklahoma City, OK., Joe Haldeman is a veteran of the Vietnam War, and unlike Heinlein's Starship Troopers, which reviewers have said to glorify the war effort, with the Forever War, Haldeman describes the grotesque, brutal, and unfair aspects of an interstellar war set a couple of thousand years in the future. Told through first person narrative, Private, turned Major William Mandella describes his battle with the Taurans, and because the time differential between that war and time back on Earth is great, so are the changes he faces to assimilate when he gets back "home". The pacing of this book is spot on, achingly beautiful passages are followed by gritty realism, and there is even a romance that is absolutely heartfelt. This book goes beyond the militant SF genre, and causes one to really feel these characters and situation(s). And, what an ending.
This book was just okay, but that does not mean I will not read the next one. :)
