I was putting off reading this book, despite loving everything Eggers has written, simply because I generally don't like biographies. That being said, this book was amazing. The book is unique in that it is not a true autobiography in the traditional sense. Valentino Achak Deng is a real man who has told his story to Eggers. Eggers has then recreated conversations, relationships, and details of turmoil from the pieces he was given. The writing style, though jumping back and forth between his life in Sudan and the US, is much more linear than A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius, and easier to read for those who were turned off by that book (which is a must read). This book had the potential to be too concerned with the facts, and end up being a dry factual account of the civil war in Sudan. Or it could have swung too far the other way and been too concerned with tugging at your heart strings and reading like a Sally Struthers Save the Children commercial. Instead Eggers guided the book just right, making you think and feel at the same time, which I find to be uncommon in modern literature.
