An incredible story about some very tough volunteers of the two-legged and four-legged varieties! This book is read by the writer, Susannah Charleson, who gives a wonderful insight into the lives of SAR (Search and Rescue) teams during the good times and not so good times. It is very clear from her descriptions just how caring a person she is, and just how in tune she is with not only Puzzle, but her other dogs she has fostered out and are permanent fixtures at home. I learned a lot about the physical, emotional and psychological challenges it takes to be able to handle SAR work. The one story that really tugged at my heart as I listened involved their recovery work after the Space Shuttle Columbia's tragic disintegration over Texas in 2003, a year before Puzzle's birth. Not only were the human searchers feeling the toll of that work, but the descriptions Susannah gave as to the dogs' reactions to what had happened. There were were some funnier stories, like the little lost girl, to have been found safely at home in a laundry basket. If anyone is interested in finding out what is exactly involved in doing SAR, this is the book to read!

Hands down Invisible Monsters is my favorite Chuck Palahniuk novel. I believe I read this before Fight Club came out and was immediately telling everyone about the book at school. It is my first Palahniuk novel and will always be my fave.
