Garret returns home after being fired and seeing his political career going down in flames. Thrown into his brother's fiancee's past, he can't help but get close to single mother Julie Remington. Julie doesn't need complications but they seem to be headed her way. Her sons father has returned in the picture, her job is becoming a worry, and she finds herself falling for Garret. Pretty good story, ties into the 1st book so several of the characters are back.
What causes someone to commit suicide? Is it one event, or several? In the case of Hannah Baker, she has 13 reasons to commit suicide. Taken separately, they seem small, insignificant; however, when put all together, it’s the snowball effect. “It’s impossible to know everything else going on in that person’s life, and how we might be adding to his/her pain.” When the novel opens, Hannah has already committed suicide and her love interest receives a set of 13 cassette tapes. As he listens to Hannah’s own words, his thoughts are interjected. Told in this cool format – it works! It would be interesting to excerpt this for kids to see a new genre. Does have two sexual situations (one is a rape); they are not graphic, but it's obvious what is happing.
Aside from a slightly slow beginning, the Uglies is an excellent science-fiction novel. The book picks up in pace around page 100 and then it is a quick read after that. Westerfeld presents very crucial and important topics about our view of beauty in today's society that are relevant to any teenager. He also includes likeable main characters that are easy to relate too! Great book! I'm excited to read Pretties next!
The ending just killed me. Book seemed overall depressing which I wasn't expecting. Great writing though!
