The last scenes of this book made the whole thing worth it. I became so invested in the characters and the outcome, and I was not let down for even one minute. I truly hope for a continuation of a series. Otherwise, I would be truly disappointed, and forever curious.

Clear and cogent introduction to Taoism in T'ang China, albeit with an almost unilateral focus upon the role of court policies on the fortunes of the religion. That said, it was quite interesting to see how the tradition was modified to serve as a vehicle for the legitimation of imperial authority.
