I’d read somewhere that actress Jodie Foster read Naked in one sitting, and then went out to buy five more copies for her friends. When I finished the book I thought little more than, “Okay, so this was David Sedaris” and unlike Foster, could not think of a single friend I’d recommend it to. Throughout my reading I hoped that it was in fact a parody of a memoir, and primarily a romp of creative fiction with his accommodating family named to keep us guessing, for I feel quite sorry for Sedaris if the merest fraction of this book is true. I got the humor, for at this point, what more can you do but laugh at such a parade of poor choices, but did not find it “Sidesplitting” as the New York Times Book Review proclaimed. As a whole, the book saddened me. So to my friends I’d say, don’t bother with this one.
