The first half was fascinating and I couldn't put it down, but then I didn't read it for a couple days. When I came back to it I couldn't get into it again, so I skimmed the rest. There was a lot of description of ceremonies, what attendants were wearing, who was there, etc. that I felt bogged things down. The flashbacks were confusing too. The part about the Caves was more interesting. The ending was surprising in that it was different than I expected, but very much a cliff hanger. It almost felt like McKinley dragged the story out just to make it more than one book and I don't know if that was her idea or the publisher's.
