They are walking on the road, the boy and the man. They have only a little food left before they need to find more. They don't want to meet anyone on the road. Anyone they meet might try to kill them for what little food they do have. Or for their shoes or blankets. They wear face masks over their noses and mouths to filter out the ash that is always falling. There are no names. Names are not important now. Even if someone tells you his name, it is probably not his real name. The man is coughing. He knows he is dying, but what will happen to the boy if he dies. He sees the boy looking at him. Papa, I'm scared. I know. Are we going to die? No. Okay. Do you believe me? I have to. Through a work mostly of fragmented dialog we put together a vague sense of what is happening and what has happened. A most interesting book. Highly recommended, especially if you like distopic fiction.
