Oh my. This was just so good. It was as good as new bread, as good as clear water on a hot day, as good as music in a minor key. It's powerful, beautifully written, thoughtfully paced, but not slow. There is a lovely romance, but one that feels inevitable because of the nature of the characters not there just to drive the plot. The two protagonists through whose alternating points of view the novel is told are both strong characters with strong desires for things other than each other but who come together out of a mutual love for their island home and its horses, domestic and magical. This is Maggie Stiefvater's sixth novel; I've loved all her books so far, but love this one best. I believe it establishes her as one of the finest YA writers working today.

"I see Manhattan like an ocean liner adrift in the middle of the Atlantic, never reaching its port. The moorings have been cast off. There’s no turning back to dry land. We’re all thrown together on this phantom ship, hallucinating, without connection to the other world. It’s a trip from which we’ll never come back." Ah. Yes!
