** spoiler alert ** Ugh, I really could have done without the dead lesbian cliche. Which is irritating, because apart from that Soul of the Fire was much more enjoyable than the last book--faster pace and more twists to keep the story moving. I really like Richard and Kahlan (and Berdine <3 and Cara <3) but I can see why people find them annoying. They are, as originally introduced, relatable characters whose actions make sense, but it seems like sometimes the needs of the plot override common sense and they really act oddly. The characters are the thing I like best about the book (I also like the rare and cute deadpan humour--Kahlan's "Thank you for the fashion advice"), so this can be frustrating. I noticed this with Jax in Law of Nines too, that a character will suddenly go against their established behavior without explanation until afterward (and in Kahlan and Jax's cases in particular, ~explanation and tears~ afterward). I guess it makes for a better "twist"?
