I'm kindof a sucker for Steve Almond. I loved "My Life In Heavy Metal" so much that I still think about the title story. I was recently at the SF Public Library browsing the new books section and this was propped up. I'd picked it up a couple of times in the bookstore and wondered about the process and how Almond and Baggott decided on this whole thing. It's pretty interesting but the letters each become like little short stories and not so much like letters that people (who aren't writers) would actually write to each other.
Right. So it's a great read. Facinating blend of history and historicity, as we used to say. Every page is researched, pieced together, and cut apart again so I, as the reader, am left wondering if he will continue to kill and when he will get caught. But really. I'm sick of this killing women and children theme, even when it's the truth of many histories. Really.
This book was just too violent for me. I'm sure there are worthwhile messages I'm missing by putting the book down. However, I identify too strongly with Bone for this book to not really hurt me.
