http://nhw.livejournal.com/1017607.html[return][return]A collection of humorous anecdotes in aid of Oxfam assembled in the mid-1970s, and very much of its time (21 index entries for "Irish stories" but only 8 for "Jewish stories"). The "famous" assembled here are a peculiar bunch and say something very odd about who Oxfam thought would appeal to the connoisseur of after-dinner humour. I'm relieved to report that one or two of the jokes were actually funny.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though it was originally intended for a target audience of individuals new to leadership, I certainly is a good excample for life skills as well. Additionally, dog lovers would gain benefit as well. Each leadership concept / chapter starts with a story from the life of Taz, a 6-pound blind miniature pinscher. The stories are pertinent and entertaining and the more you learn about Taz the more you want to hear. Taz is an amazing dog. Each chapter also has actual examples from the authors own management experiences followed by the lesson. The book is less than 100 pages and yet packs a big punch. In the back of the book the author also included some training ideas. This book is worth reading and is well worth the price.

I liked this book. For some reason I kept finding and reading books that have stuff about the Plague. I found the stuff about the flagellists interesting. I've always been somewhat intrigued about jewish mysticism so I found that aspect of it interesting. I'll probably never get to Prague so I found it interesting reading about that city.

This is one of the books I should have read and not listened-to. While the reader has a lovely voice, she's just not quite right for Calpurnia Tate, who should have been spunky and boisterous. She was a good choice for CT's mom or teacher but I felt she missed the exuberance of most of the children. It's a nice book, hearkening back to old-fashioned family values in a time before cell phones and the internet. I would recommend it as reading material for young girls who are curious about the world around them as well as boys who read things other than action/adventure/non-fiction. Other than the turn-of-the-century and the science aspect, I don't think it stands out from other books of the sort - Anne of Green Gables books, Laura Ingalls Wilder stories, even Pippy Longstocking. However, it's a good introduction for young readers to this genre.
