Loved this book. More thought provoking that her YA novels, but it still has older YA appeal as the characters are followed from childhood through their mid-20s. Two sisters, Riley and Alice, befriend the poor little rich boy next door during their summer visits to Fire Island. Riley is rambunctious and daring and Alice is the quiet little sister. Paul is Riley's best friend and treats Alice harshly but as they grow older he understands he is doing this to protect his heart. Little does he know that Alice feels as strongly as he does. A health crisis with Riley brings both young woman back under their parents' roof in NYC and, as always, Alice sacrifices her life to make Riley happy. At times you want to just shake Alice and tell her to grow up but some of us are slower at maturing than other and when she, and Paul, figure it out, it is quite lovely. I thoroughly satisfying read.
