Facinating description of Nicholas and Alexandra, and the Russian Revolution...and of the intrigue of the court and influence of Rasputin...
Like with the first book, I really loved the writing style. The last 30ish pages were so sad though, it'll break my heart if things get worse for Janie. It kind of makes me wish I hadn't read it and stayed oblivious to her future problems.
Enthralled in the beginning of the book, couldn't put it down, second third still ok, then I just wanted it to end. I speed read the last couple of chapters. I can't explain why, but I had had enough of the family, except Desdemona.
A friend at work brought me this one and suggested I read it. We've bonded over Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, so I know she's got taste. This one makes me question it a little bit. I agree with the reviewer who said this book was mediocre, unoriginal, and cheesy. It reminded me a lot of the Twilight series in that the characters were dopey and way too dependent on each other. The love story in this one may be even more ignorant and dependent than that one. The concept of the book was interesting, but it just wasn't once you started reading. I was bored and annoyed by the characters. It was a chore to finish this book.
My first Ed Gorman - loved it! Ending wrapped up a little quickly, but definitely good enough for me to read the other four or five books of his I own...
