Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate to Brooklyn to find a better life. Told from Kimberly's perspective, the story unfolds as she and her mother try living in unlivable circumstances. Her mother's sister "rescues" them from China, then puts them to work in sweatshop labor, paying illegally low wages and charging them to pay back all the expenses she incurred, with interest, to bring them to America. She puts them in an apartment that is abandoned, has broken windows, rats, cockroaches, and no heat. Kimberly has to learn English, go to school, learn enough to try getting them out of this life, and spend hours at the factory helping her mom so they can survive. Kimberly keeps her situation a secret from even her best friend. As she grows up, her gift for math and her work ethic keep her hopes alive. Is it enough? A beautiful story, told in a voice that is captivating. I found myself not wanting to believe living conditions could ever be that bad, and wondering how realistic it was to rise above these conditions. Most cannot. It's the pull on these extremes that keeps me thinking.
Not finished yet but think it needs more plot!
