One of my favorite books of all time focused on Indonesian hero K'tut Tantri. An adventurous American woman who decided in the 1920's to travel to Bali after seeing a faded poster in a travel window in New York. She ships over to Java, buys a car, hires a junk to bring her to Bali. She drives off the beach inland until she runs out of gas in front of a Raja's estate who adopts her as his daughter and thus protects her from harm. She grows up to start one of the first hotels on the now infamous Kuta Beach. Then she become a revolutionary hero during the Dutch revolution and the then the Japanese occupation. Imprisoned and tortured in a tiny cell, to save her sanity she makes tarot cards out of her banana leaf food wrappers. Brilliant story!
