I heart barack obama. Obama wrote this book after being elected editor of the harvard law review (first black editor) so it is him speaking from his pre-political voice. What results is a (if sometimes a bit flowery) lovely book about an individuals journey to find a racial and personal identity. Obama's own background is fascinating - son of a white mother and black african kenyan father who meet when the dad is studying at university of hawaii....obama grows up in hawaii and Indonesia, then after college goes to chicago's south side to work as a community organizer amongst the urban (black) poor. Throughout this book he is trying to figure out his place within the politics of race relations in america (and kenya) and is also trying to understand the father he never really knew. Ends with him traveling to Kenya to meet his half brothers/sisters and family there after the death of his father (sort of a Roots-type experience). The book was rather candid and i totally related to him - which is so rare when considering politicians (LOVE that he is not an old white man).
