This was darker, more serious than the first book. While I enjoyed all the footnotes in the first book, I was actually glad they weren't as pervasive in the second -- the gimmick had worn thin. Anyway, Stroud is an excellent writer. The story is not as entertaining but it's filled with wonderful writing. I am pretty sure now that I don't like this Nathaniel/John Mandrake character. It is sad that he has no one to look up to or guide him as he matures, but his superiority complex is annoying. I do enjoy watching his tantrums though. Nothing like brat not getting what he wants. Bartimaeus rox. He is sometimes all too human, and on the flip side as cold and removed from humanity as one could be. Makes me wish there were djinni. Have to read the third one now.
