if you want a drawn out and detailed history of all the physicists and their contributions that led to the building of the CERN Hadron Collider, this is the book for you. Halpern doesn't begin discussing the LHC until somewhere around Chapter 12, close to 3/4 through the book. most of the book is made up of anecdotes and metaphors. the anecdotes ranged from deadly dull to mildly interesting. the metaphors were so annoying, i wanted to throw my Kindle. i understand some of them were intended to make things easier for the lay person to understand, but when you get 5-6 back-to-back paragraphs of nothing but metaphor, the cutesy analogies start to get irritating. i gave up after Chapter 12.
Everything about this book is compelling, from the characters to the plot twists. Even though it is from another century, and the characters and prose are written as such, I still found it hard to put down. LOVED IT.
I plan on making a list of all of the Sci-fi novels that Morwenna read throughout this book/journal as well as her comments about them. She is a cheeky, insightful character. This novel definitely appealed to my geeky side, however, I found the ending to be lacking. Though I did enjoy the journal style, I think I would have enjoyed it better if would have been interspersed within a prose framework. I may give this book another read in the future. It took me a couple of weeks to read, so perhaps, spacing it over a day or two might change my mind about it.
Picked up this book hoping to escape the political debacle happening in RL...got sucked into the politics of the Potter world instead. Much more enjoyable though!
