Overhyped things disappoint. And I marked this book as to read before all the hype but of course it took the hype (aka NY Times Best Books of 2010) for me to actually purchase it. We all know that it was the sick Austrian father who committed unspeakable horrors that really generated more interest in this book and although it was that perverse interest that led me to read the book, it really had nothing to do with the criminal that carried the story, it really was the relationship between mother and son that develops in the harshest of circumstances. Best of all though was the author's use of language... it's hard to describe what it was she did in the book given I'm not a linguist but I'm going to declare literary magic the way she crafted the language of a young child who grows up completely shut off from any outside contact. Highly recommended!
