When as a little girl Young Ju hears her family talk about America, their words are so glowing she believes they are moving to heaven. The reality, sadly, is more than a step from heaven. Trying circumstances and cultural clashes lead to the steadily increasing abusiveness of her father. Through this, Young Ju dreams poetically of becoming free from her situation. She absorbs thoughts of choice and independence from her new culture, and ends up in a confrontation that changes the family forever. This book is recommended for 8th grade and up. Though the story takes a while to get the main character to her teen years, the time spent on taking the reader through her development is worth while. This, along with broken English used at the beginning, may put off unmotivated readers. The supporting characters in this book are also richly developed. A wise and loving grandmother, longsuffering mother, and angst ridden brother flesh out the tale. Even the abusive father is not portrayed solely as abusive. This treatment makes this book an excellent choice for readers interested in the complexity of abusive relationships. For sensitive readers, it is possible a subtle negative association may be seen regarding the Americanization of Young Ju leading to her freeing herself from her staunchly Korean and abusive father. A revelation in the ending will hopefully mitigate any problems with this issue.
