I want to see this movie but wanted to read the book first since the books are always better. I read the book in less than a day's time and for me that means it really held my attention. I think it represents many themes and realistic fears faced by many in life. The literacy theme is something close to my heart since my profession as a librarian involves promoting literacy. I love that reading aloud held such intimacy for the characters because I too love to read aloud to children and adults. I read aloud to my boyfriend and we both find it a special, intimate, quiet share time that is not filled with TV, electronic devices and the rest of the interruptions we now know. Hannah was a most conflicted woman but I found her involvement with Michael to be selfish, immoral and just plain wrong. Even though his character gained some wisdom in the end by being involved with her, it surely cost him greatly. So, while I sympathize with her inability to read, I do not condone her actions. In working with children and being an adult, I am passionate about our responsibility to always protect the child. I recommend this book and now will see the movie to compare the two. I suspect I will find the book much better.

A fascinating book sure to charm some and enrage many (especially economists and statisticians). Personally, the author and I share the same pet peeves about business and MBAs, so I'm in the charmed column. If you love the Gaussian bell curve, you'll hate this book. If you don't think the bell curve captures real life, read on.
