Tattoos on the Heart is both heartbreaking and hopeful. Fr. Greg Boyle tells stories about his 20 years of working with youth in the gangs on Los Angeles. Unfortunately, many of his stories involve death. He addressed the question of how he carries on by quoting Mother Teresa, who said that God does not call us to be successful, He calls us to be faithful. G, as the homies call him, is faithful. He just keeps showing up. And by showing up he has made a difference. He has saved lives, and he has turned lives around. The stories are grouped in this book by themes. At times I was wishing it had been more chronological. I was interested in knowing more about G's journey and how he got to the point of being able to just show up. I can't exactly put the book down, show up in the barrio, and get away with calling people "dog." But I can be faithful in my own life. I can just keep showing up.
