I love this book so much. It is about a girl named Charlotte Doyle, who finds that she is the only passenger of a ship with an angry captain and a crew hungry for revenge. She gets stuck in the middle of a violent and unfair fight between captain and crew. She finally chooses a side and fights for what she believes. This is an amazing book about her transformation while she is on the trip and about democracy, class and race in our world today. I recommend it to middle schoolers.

An interesting book about a thirteen year old Hmong refugee and what she went through both in the camps and in trying to fit in and understand American society. Describes relationships with her cousins and Grandma well, but I found this on the children's lit shelves. Due to some content about rape, though not graphic, I would have to label it YA instead. Good read for twelve and up.

The author won the Pulitzer in 2008 for this novel, his first BTW and I can certainly say it was well deserved. This was a fantastic read from beginning to end and I especially enjoyed the bits of history of the Dominican Republic added in as footnotes. I will definitely be on the look out for more from this very promising author!

I loved this book from the beginning. Great detail and a wonderful beginning to an amazing series. I read it years ago, but I have read it many times since. I cannot get enough of it.
