Peachtree Road is a guilty pleasure. It was the first Siddons novel that I read and I think it was her best, though I admit I probably feel that way because I live in Atlanta and am familiar with her geographical and historical references. This novel satisfied my requirements for a true "beach Read." The story quickly drew me in and I wanted to read until I was finished. It was interesting and I cared about the characters, but I didn't have to think too hard. A great story.
I cannot tell whether or not I liked this book, because I saw the movie first, which makes it a lot less enjoyable to read knowing the entire plot. Aside from that, it was very well written and the characters were nicely developed. I have heard the main character, Barbar Covett, compared to Humbert in Lolita, and I would have to strongly agree. It is fascinating to see the way Barbara tries to make her "victim", and all the other people she encounters, seem stupid and lowly, therefore making her seem much more reasonable. Very well done.
Holy crap, did I hate this book.
The plotting / tension / suspense / cliff-hanger-esque endings are just so obvious, I kept chuckling while reading this.
Several children go missing and the story revolves around the search and glimpses to the past to help the reader understand the relationships and conditions of the characters. This was an easy read and at times exciting. One of the crucial characters was not sufficiently developed to make sense of the outcome and I was disappointed with the ending. On a positive note, the audio version was well read by the various voices telling the story.
I must say that I enjoyed The Pursuit of Love more than Love In A Cold Climate. Nancy Mitford is a delightful read.
