"I shall do one thing in this life - one thing for certain - that is, love you, and long for you, and keep wanting you till I die." There are endless quotes in this Thomas Hardy novel about love and loss, 3 men in love with 1 woman who loves none of them (and all of them). Set in the English countryside and mostly about love triangles in a small farmtown, this story reads slower than Jude the Obscure, with a little less scandal and more true heart. However, never was there a character so essentially good as Gabriel Oak or so dubious as Bathsheba Everdene, whose vanity gives way to her simple naivete. It takes some patience, but Hardy's prose is always fascinating, beautifully stated and yet surprisingly modern.
Although it was interesting, the political leanings of Mr. Terkel were obvious as a result of his editing and selection.
It was good. A little lacking for a novel, but Wolff is comical. Not a fave, not a regret.
