http://nhw.livejournal.com/998924.html[return][return]good background essays, very good restaurant recommendations, a sensible approach to navigating around the sights. My one complaint is that the maps are not tied to the text awfully well, and actually allowed us to go seriously astray when we looked for the catacombs along the Appian Way.
Set in New Mexico. Funny. Political. Human. Full of innumerable characters and their stories which weave together in an unruly tapestry. Much of the book reminds me of Steinbeck, and shows a deep love for the place and the people around his fictional Taos. The story is set around water rights and a landgrab which threatens to displace the rural culture of the old timers. While I found this interesting and informative as it is well rooted in New Mexican history, it is the wealth of the comedies and tragedies within the book that make it worth reading.
Wow! The readers were top notch and the book should be assigned reading to all high school students.
