Willem Elsschot, a Flemish writer, wrote about a turn of the century boarding house in Paris. The characters - the boarders and the other people that help run the place - are on the whole unlikable and generally remain just sketches. Elsschot makes fun of everyone with equal abandon.

George Orwell’s short novel “Animal Farm” is perhaps something many have read if schooled in the US. However I think it can be best appreciated as an adult. This tale of power and corruption is a great symbolic tale of what has historically gone wrong and can go wrong if that power is abused. Of course the story is very much about communism, but I think it can truly be applied in any area of life where those less powerful are oppressed and those able do not speak up for what is true and correct. "Animal Farm" tells the story of what happens when oppressed barnyard animals rebel against their master Mr. Jones and then attempt to rule themselves. It is quickly seen that they give up one “dictator” for the next. In fact worst things happen when the animals govern over each other. Through very simple story telling Mr. Orwell paints a clear picture of what happens in a failing government. It is a simple, enjoyable read that will get the brain stimulated and thinking about past and even contemporary issues. A must read for everyone.

I listened to this on audio and thought the narrator was terrific. The whole time I was wondering, "Is she or isn't she?" The answer to that question blew me away!
