I'm just not a fan of the graphic format.
This is the delightful tale of "the widow" a 19 year old barely woman who has murdered her husband because of abusive emotionally distant behaviors. Told in the third person we follow this plucky protagonist as she flees her two monstrous brothers-in-law across rural 1903 america. The widow is a well developed character and coupled with Adamson's ability to conjure the gritty reality of her situation, without loosing touch with her humanity leads to a beautifully wrought tale. A diverse and spectacular group of characters who she meets along her escape keep the plot fresh and exciting. Adamson who began her literary life as a poet has a wonderful lyrical voice with some almost transcendent flowing passages. Particularly lovely is her ability to capture details and naunces of people and places without bogging the reader down. Overall, a delightful tale with similaries to Cold Mountain.
Laine is befriended by the beautiful and popular Leah. Over the years leah torments her, leaving her confused and manipulated. But Leah has her own torments and demons and her life spirals until she is killed in a car accident. But the lesosns Leah taught laine will be with her forever. Each chapter is a "lesson" Laine learns from Leah's treatment of her and their relationship over the years. Leah is victimizer and victim both. And the emotions between the two very vivid. I found it very intense and was happy with the "true" friends Laine was able to meet.
