This is a YA book covering the history of eight female pirates, from a Danish princess shrouded in myth to a Chinese warlord who commanded six fleets of pirate ships. My favorite was Fanny Campbell, a revolutionary-era pirate who set off in disguise to rescue her fiance from a Caribbean prison. They later capture a British ship with Fanny's former suitor on board! I can't believe they never made a movie out of this. Oh wait...

This is a great read for anybody who is getting married or thinking about it. Has its flaws, as you would expect from the author of Eat, Pray, Love (or as I like to call it -- "don't be sad, just have lots of money and travel around the world a little bit and you'll find the meaning of life!") but it is still informative and Gilbert's voice as a writer makes for a quick read.

Wow. One of the best books I have ever read. The format of the storytelling is mesmerizing and the life/inner life of the two main characters (one of whom is accessed through - though not only in - the memory of the dying man) are compelling in the smallest, most personal ways. The writing is gorgeous in its lyricism and simplicity.
