What sets it apart from other apocolyptical books is that it does not deal with all the wishy-washy we're gonna die stuff. A nuclear holocaust has occured and because of the wind current trends, Australians have survived, along with a few others, such as an American submarine captain and his crew. The lethal cloud is slowly moving toward them, but they've all accepted this, in their own way. It's really not sci-fi at all, and it's not sappy. It's just very real, and very good. I highly recommend it.
This book introduces you to some new characters and then entwines them with the ones from the first book. While I enjoyed this story and learned a lot more about the world Chima created, this book was much darker. People were killed and tortured and bad things happened. I would feel uncomfortable with my kids reading this one.
Anita's books are thought-provoking page-turners that always leave you wrought with emotion, good or bad. She develops her characters so thoroughly that you can almost picture and empathize with them. And, they are all set in New England towns!
