What I really wanted to read was Craig Thompson's most recent graphic novel, "Carnet de Voyage," about his travels in France. A short animated film adaptation of CDV was made recently, and I really enjoyed it, so I was interested in reading the book, but alas, the Brooklyn Public Library did not carry it. (None of their gazillion branches!) What was in stock, however, was "Blankets," which I had been vaguely familiar with - I believe a fellow teacher had recommended it to me as a title to add to the graphic novels collection in my classroom library. I get why - I feel like I would have enjoyed "Blankets" much more if I had read it as a fifteen-year-old. It's a coming of age story, largely focused on the author's first love (a girl from a Midwestern church camp - they were both outcasts). I appreciated the artwork, but the narrative was a bit too emo for my taste. I'm still going to keep an eye out for "Carnet de Voyage," though.
