Not as compelling as Kite Runner, but a good, easy way to get a picture of the history of Afghanistan and Kabul. (I know, its an important enough subject that I should probably read a real history book, but who has the time?!) Book gives a glimpse of a fictionalized life that stretches over decades of war and helps bring life to news reports I hear now.

another girl too stupid to see an abusive relationship in the making.

A rather brief, though intense, visit into the life of author Sophy Chase during what must be the worst week in her life. Forced by the unexpected death of her estranged husband to leave her new life in the relative anonymity of New York City, and return to the small community of Swansea Island, Massachusetts, to deal with people and issues from before, during, and after their separation. Though laced with intriguing questions which could have easily gone the way of a good mystery, this story remained one of a woman's struggle to maintain her self-control in demanding circumstances, and of what she learned about herself and others during those three or four days. I learned of this novel through a tribute to Benedict's birthday on Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac.
