The book is about the adventure of a little girl named Mary Lennox - or rather Mistress Mary - who used to be very spoilt and disagreeable. She and her family lived in India. Her father was a very busy man, he held a position there under the English Government, while her mother - a beautiful young woman - spent most of her time being a socialite. She didn't care a bit about her daughter and left her with an Ayah, an Indian nanny. A cholera breakout in India killed both Mary's parents and her Ayah. She was left alone. She was then taken back to England to live with her uncle, Mr. Archibald Craven in Yorkshire. Her uncle was rather peculiar, so she heard. He was a wealthy widower with a son, Colin, whom he hid from the world because he was worried (and ashamed) that he would be a hunchback like himself. The birth of Colin cost him his beloved wife. She didn't survive and the fact that Colin had her eyes made him not want look at him in the eyes, he would come and stare at Colin whenever he was asleep. The late Mrs. Craven had a garden that she really loved. When She died, Mr. Craven decided to lock the gate of the garden and he buried the key, he didn't wish anyone to enter the garden. When Mary first heard of the garden, the Secret Garden she called it, she was really curious about it. She decided to find out where the garden was and she succeeded, her mission was to bring the garden back to life. She did it with the help of Dickon; an animal charmer who was also the brother of one of the servants at the manor where Mary lived, Colin and an old gardener who used to work for the late Mrs. Craven. The gardening activity that the children did, the fresh air of the spring and the sun apparently brought Colin, who was ill and a hypochondriac, to a healthy state. Colin being healthy of course made Mr. Craven very happy and Mary became a healthy and agreeable child. This book is so beautifully written. The story, the characters, the garden and the surrounding came to life in this book. It was really hard for me to put it down, I was so absorbed by the story and it felt to me as if I were there myself, at the moor in Yorkshire, breathing the same air Mary and her friends breathed, enjoying the beautiful view of the moor and the garden with them.
